August 19, 2013- Week 3; Bloomfield, MI

Hi family. I seriously have like 10 minutes to write this but I wanted to put the pictures up first before I forget.
1st of all this week was SO busy. We had specialized training with half the mission. Talked about working with members and the importance of starting with where the members are at as far as missionary work goes. Helping teach them the HOW To of sharing the gospel before WILL You-makes sense right? That’s how people keep commitments guys-they need to know what they’re doing and how. So don’t be surprised to ask for referrals and never get any because members don’t always know HOW to find people to refer…yes, start there.
ANd there were tons of other amazing things we chatted about particularly media that will be coming to the mission. We are a guinea pig mission that will be using media soon enough, Ipads, facebook for proselyting. So we’re getting prepped for that. No idea when it’s going to officially come though. Watch, my visa will come right before it happens haha The Lord does have a sense of humor-oh He does indeed 🙂
2nd we went on exchanges this week! Sister Merrill and I went down to southfield and Sister Mecham came to bloomfield for the day to work with Sister Lundgren. While we were on exchanges we had a sweet experience. We  Sister Merril, Me, Sister Fisher &Sister Manufekai (us 4) were going to an appointment in an apartment building. We walked into the elevator and there was a girl in her 20’s standing on the other side on her phone. We smiled at her when we walked in and then she turned to us and said “are you guys mormons?” we responded “yes!” enthusiastically and asked her how she knew. She told us she used to be one. We began talking with her and the elevator continued to go up and down and as other people came in she then got off her floor which we realized we couldn’t let her go yet so we awkwardly followed her out ha ha. It was so funny. She seemed shy but happy that we were talking to her. We found out that she’s been inactive for about 6 years and her younger brother’s name is listed in our Bloomfield Singles Branch. Her parents are also active and they’re in our ward! (different last name though-so we’re trying to find them) Her name is Keyana and she lives in detroit but happened to visiting a friend in the building that day. She had said that she wanted to talk to missionaries for a while to get back into church but didn’t know how to approach them when she saw them/was too scared. She said that she’s seen them lately and even that day walking into the building she felt that some missionaries were going to be in the building that day. Yes the day we were there…. And then we found her. AMAZING. She had lost her book of Mormon so I handed her a commissary copy I had and we got her information to refer her to the elders down in detroit. I was so humbled that the Lord crossed our paths and let us talk to her. I could feel her heartache and see the loneliness that she was feeling. Especially because she admitted how she had gotten tatoos and smoked and was afraid of going back to church because of those things she’d done. How grateful I was to talk with her and assure her that the Lord still loves her and that SHE CAN come back. We have a message of hope of the love of our Heavenly Father who’s always there with His arms outstretched.
Had we not been in that elevator at that time, we may have never found her. I am so grateful that we were at the right place at the right time to help Keyana. My heart is still full of love for her and gratitude to Heavenly Father. I really hope the missionaries down in detroit  find her and help her feel the spirit again in her life and for her to FEEL God’s love moer abundantly. Ah I’m so excited for her. It’s experiences like that that make a mission (as hard as it is day in and day out) all worth it.
The pictures you see our from our event saturday. The Woodward Dream Cruise-Motor City. This is an event that happens every august right here in Bloomfield. People from all over the nation and some even globally come. All day people take their old/souped up cars and drive up and down woodward ave for show. It’s awesome! There were 30,000 cars registered and then of course most people just come to watch. Old school Chevy’s, porsches, T-birds, corvettes, ferraris, lotus, HUGE trucks etc. Pretty much whatever your mind can come up with, it was there. Since the temple and stake center are right off woodward we decided to use it as a missionary opportunity and put up signs to offer free parking and tours of our chapel. They had never tried this before so we knew it could go really great or awful. long story short, many people came to park and sit on the church’s lawn to watch the cars. So although we only had 1 tour we did end up contacting a lot of people. We gave out 4 book of mormons, lots of pamphlets and tons of pass along cards. We got a few referrals for people that were visiting from out of the area. We had some really neat lessons with people and it was awesome to see how open people are when you approach them out in public vs. knocking on their door. Haha. Oh the joys of tracting.
All in all good experience and they’re going to try again next year with an information booth about our church and particularly the temple since it’s right there. It was fun to watch peoples faces seeing the signs and doing a double take at the temple-because well, come on, it’s a temple kind of random and yet SO BEAUTIFUL. We actually took some pictures of people standing by it that were visiting haha-more missionary opportunities.
Awesome week! I can’t believe I’m already halfway done with this transfer. And on the 27th I’ll have been out 5 months! Where does the time go???
Love you all!
